INTRODUCTION TO RAMADAN:
“Ramadan” is the name of the ninth month in Islamic calender. The word is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of rations. It is considered the most venerated and blessed month of the Islamic year. There are five pillars in Islam.
1. Belief in the oneness of Allah and Prophethood.
2. Offering of daily prayers (Namaz).
3. Giving of Zakat (poor’s due).
4. Observing of fasts during Ramadan.
5. Performing Hajj at least once in lifetime (if one is solvent).
‘Fasting’ during the month of Ramadan is the fourth pillar of Islam. SAUM or SAYAM is the technical term used for it in Islam which literally means to be at rest. It has been so neamed because while observing a fast one abstains from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk. Fast creats piety and fear of Allah.
The Holy Prophet has been reported to have said, “Fasting is a shield for you as it saves you from sins in the world and would protect you from Hell in the hereafter”.
